Modernize legacy Data Loads

Overview: A major metal solutions provider in North America had a legacy application built in on-prem TIBCO Scribe for feeding data into Microsoft Dynamics 365- based CRM system

The organization was looking to modernize its processes to help support
future growth and expansion while filling the gap around some of the pain
areas that it had been living with over the past several years.

Business Challenges & Desired Objectives

Their existing TIBCO Scribe jobs were not scalable which resulted in some
key challenges for the organization:

  • The jobs had to be executed in sequence for individual companies as they
didn’t have the ability to run in parallel thus delaying data availability in CRM (Dynamics 365)
    Objective: Enable parallel processing
  • The jobs were not easy to modify and hence roll out to new companies
required extensive enhancements and resulted in a longer time to
    market
Objective: Lower time to market for new companies
  • The jobs would encounter frequent failures and hence required a
dedicated team to manage and maintain the operations to keep the
    lights on
Objective: Automated solution with minimal manual interventions

Solution

The client worked with Bitwise and Microsoft to realize their vision of a cloud-based Data Integration strategy and selected “Azure Data Factory (ADF)” and other Azure native services like “Synapse Link for Dataverse”, “SQL DB”, “Blob Storage”, “Key Vault” as the best fit to modernize their CRM
landscape.

Bitwise re-engineered the client’s legacy jobs to take advantage of ADF’s advanced capabilities coupled with a custom-built Web UI for providing orchestration and monitoring capabilities.

Project Challenges

The customer’s existing on-prem source file schedules and total inventory resulted in higher-than-expected overall costs.

The Bitwise team leveraged their understanding of the ADF platform architecture and analyzed the file arrival schedule, relationships, formats, and size to come up with an approach to consolidate the source files before processing through ADF.

This enabled ADF spark clusters to be utilized to their full potential thus requiring far less compute to churn out the output.

Below is a snippet of cost reduction that was achieved during the development phase:
